length of loose-laid rope where the
first tucks are made. An eye splice with
a thimble is said to be a hard eye,
while without a thimble it is called a
soft eye.
Whichever type of eye splice, it is
best that it is finished off by tapering.
This can be best done by cutting out
some of the yarns in each of the
strands, perhaps reducing the strand
Continued, on page 212.
1 Tie a constrictor knot round the rope
back from the end of the rope. Unlay the
strands back to this point and position
the rope so that there is one “leg” either
side of the rope and one along the
center.
2 Tucking against the lay, tuck the first
strand under the strand it is nearest to on
the standing part of the rope—in other
words, tuck strand # 1 under # 1 in the
standing part.
3 Turn the splice slightly and tuck the
strand that Is to the right of the first strand
under the strand that is to the right of the
first strand on the standing part of the
rope. In other words tuck # 2 under # 2
on the standing part.
4 Now turn the splice more and tuck # 3
strand under # 3 in the standing part.
This tuck should also be against the lay.
