All juniors enroll in a GRE Prep Seminar that serves as an introduction to the GRE. The seminar provides
a basic overview to the test examines each section and provides students with sample questions and
exercises. This course meets for a one-hour session each week, concluding with a GRE post-test that is
used to develop an individualized action plan to strengthen performance before taking the actual GRE as
seniors. Seniors enroll in the GRE Prep Course that focuses on techniques for answering particular types
of test questions, with time to practice these strategies in class. The course incorporates small group work
and individual practice using sample tests and online practice versions of the GRE. At the end of the
course, students take the actual GRE, discuss test results with the Project Director and, if needed, develop
individual study plans to prepare for a second GRE. Eligible students receive reduced fee waivers from
the University Financial Aid Office or Educational Testing Service. As part of its commitment to enhance
BDEinSTEM services, McNair pays the fees for students who do not receive fee waivers. During the
academic year, BDEinSTEM and SSS participants interested in graduate study are strongly encouraged to
register for a free GRE practice test, offered on campus by Kaplan Test Prep.
C6.4.E Senior Retreat
Each September, in collaboration with other state and regional McNair programs, seniors gather for a
weekend retreat that reinforces motivation to complete the graduate school application process and
expands support networks. Held at a secluded location, the retreat offers workshops on the graduate school
application process, financial assistance at the graduate level, writing personal statements, getting strong
letters of recommendation, and interpreting the GRE. In both structured and informal sessions, seniors
exchange ideas and concerns about the graduate school admission process and discuss adjustment issues
they face when they begin graduate study. A primary retreat feature is participation of recent
BDEinSTEM graduates who are currently enrolled in PhD programs. This opportunity to interact with
others who are facing or have successfully overcome the same anxieties eases the transition to graduate
school. On the final day of the retreat, participants review the GET Ready Advising plan, looking at
identified graduate programs, list of faculty recommenders, timelines for completing applications and for
meeting faculty members to discuss letters of recommendation.
