mentors by providing travel and registration funding for participants to attend at least one undergraduate

C6.3 Project Instruction in Research Methods, Writing, and GRE Prep

            C6.3.A. Research Methods Seminar
The BDEinSTEM research methodologies seminar assures that all research interns have a basic

foundation prior to the start of their summer research project. Modeled after the PEERS and Mayerhoff,

the seminar examines students’ research designs within the context of established disciplinary

methodology. Using selected readings, students investigate models of data collection, analysis, and

presentation of findings. Newly admitted participants schedule individual consultations with a librarian

who covers available resources, information needs, and research tools (print and electronic) pertaining to

their selected research topics. By the end of the course, students identify a research question, develop

appropriate methodology, and write and present a research proposal.

            C6.3.B. Writing and Presentation Skills

A seven-week writing/presentation seminar introduces summer interns to skills they need as graduate
students. Working in traditional and computer classrooms, interns learn the specific documentation style

appropriate to their discipline and complete their summer research papers—a thesis of fifteen or more
pages—as an integral part of the summer research institute. In addition to writing, students learn and

practice presentation skills. Writing instructors emphasize peer review and the need to make information
accessible to readers outside of the field. At the end of the summer internship, students’ theses must be

approved by a committee consisting of the faculty mentor, the writing instructor, and the Project Director.

            C6.3.C. GRE Instruction

These summer courses (see section C6.4.D.) Plan to Provide Individual and Group Services Designed to

Enhance Successful Entry into Post-Baccalaureate Education.
