C6.4. Plan to Provide Individual and Group Services Designed to Enhance Successful Entry into
Post-Baccalaureate Education.
Surveys of project alumni and informal contact with graduate admissions personnel indicate that strong
faculty recommendations, early completion of application paperwork, and competitive GRE scores are
key factors in entry into graduate programs. Therefore, BDEinSTEM offers services throughout
enrollment to help participants make early, informed choices of “best fit” graduate programs, to
thoroughly prepare for the GRE, and to develop networks with faculty and others who can support their
applications for admission and financial support.
C6.4.A. Tutoring
Tutoring provides Scholars the opportunity to excel in their field of study. With the assistance of the SSS
Director and through Tutoring and Academic Skills Programs (TASP)/Supplemental Instruction Program
(SIP) support via the Tutoring Coordinator, BDEinSTEM identifies graduate students to assist participants
in upper level courses. The FITW RAM and NSF Ecosystem for Students Success will provide additional
support. Also, those participants who may have struggled in the previous term or enroll in challenging
courses are identified and referred to the TASP Tutoring Coordinator and/or to the Writing/Speaking
Center for assistance. McNair scholars will also serve as tutors for SSS students, providing them with
valuable teaching experience.
