                 The Qualifying Examination
                 The Qualifying examination is the first examination the doctoral student
                 has to take as soon as they are done with the five core courses.  The
                 examination will cover all the five core courses.  Students have to
                 advance to candidacy  in order to qualify to take the Qualifying
                                   i
                 Examination.  Students must take the Qualifying Examination during the
                 first two years and pass the examination by the third year.  The
                 Qualifying Examination is a written examination that is offered every
                 semester.  It is offered on the second Friday in November during the Fall
                 semester, and on the second Friday in April during the Spring semester.
                 Students have to pass the examination in order to continue the doctoral
                 program and students who fail on the second attempt will be
                 automatically dismissed from the doctoral program.
