Conservation and Rehabilitation of Green Space
Why Is the Ecological Conservation and Rehabilitation
in the Park & Green Space the First to Be Concerned ?
Taipei City used to be a swamp area. There are many wetland habitats, and the natural conditions
of the land have created the diversity of ecological species and native plants in Taipei today.
There are several unique conservation animals and plants in the city. However, due to the rapid
development of urbanization, the effects of heat island effect and habitat fragmentation have
gradually impacted the small creatures living in the jungle, and even reduced the opportunities
for people in recent generations of getting closer to nature and ecology.
The Results of Parks’ Ecological Rehabilitation
in Taipei City
In the past, there were irrigated paddy fields all over in Taipei. Many of them had the existence
of native firefly Aquatica ficta. This Aquatica ficta firefly is often an indicator as a “good
ecological environment ”. In recent years, the office hopes that the park finds the natural ecology
and find the historical context and impression by rehabilitation of this firefly. Since 2014, the
office has successfully cooperated with academic institutions, civic groups and local people to
study and implement habitat redevelopment. It has successfully rehabilitated this firefly and
revived many diversified ecologies in "Rongxing Garden Park", "Muzha Park" and "Daan Forest
Park". According to the statistics in the firefly breeding season from April to May of 2018, the
average number of the firefly during peak days can reach more than 300 counts, the number of
firefly viewers reaches 47,906, and the participation of volunteers reaches 518.
However, with the awareness of environmental protection and sustainable development in
recent years, the ecological rehabilitation of Taipei City Park has not only rehabilitate fireflies,
but also the native species and diversified ecology such as Taiwan Barbets, Crested Goshawks,
Tree Frogs, and Allomyrina Dichotomus. Furthermore, this Office worked with natural
environmental protection groups to preserve and protect the suburban mountains of Taipei. The
primitive and rich natural ecological habitat environment, the 3.8-hectare Fuyang Eco Park, the
first ecological preservation in Taipei City, is a natural park with educational function, had been
actively promoted to be an ecological rehabilitation park. The Nangang Shanchu grotto waste
sanitary landfill site is redeveloped into a “Shanshuilu Eco Park” covering an area of about 21
hectares.
