Greening of Roads

The Origin of the Road Greening in Taipei City

In order to quickly improve the environment, Taipei City Government dedicated to promoting
urban green landscaping as its main goal in earlier days so that green can be seen everywhere in
the city. However, with the evolution of the times, standards raised too. Citizens’ request for the
quality of the road landscape have gradually increased. To enrich colors in the city, the Office,
started from 1996, within the budget of “Promoting the city’s green landscaping,” has carried out
projects to beautify the important roads in Taipei such as Renai Road, Xinyi Road and Dunhua
South Road, with graphic design of vibrant grass and flowers, thus started a new chapter for
urban green landscaping.

Implementation Results

In 2003, the Public Works Department set up a major municipal construction blueprint for
the public works in order to improve the public construction and make the capital world-class.
One of the goals, “Blooming everywhere, Beautiful Taipei New Hometown”, set the directive
principle of “controlling the budget and improving the beauty of the city” as the roads green
landscaping strategy and “fine and beautiful” the goal. It is to employ appropriate grass flowers,
ground cover, flowering shrubs and foliage plants to highlight the main streets so that financial
resources could be more effectively spent and the principal for the green landscaping for roads in
Taipei has been confirmed.

Up to now, the Office has improved its landscaping area by 210,000 square meters every year.
It is visible around the main streets, the traffic island, traffic circle, green space and important
conjunctions where the roads connecting Taipei and neighbor cities. Diversified plants, shrubs,
ground covers, etc., are combined to make various designs with geometric lines and patterns,
graphics or shapes of local features. The sceneries have become inseparable parts of the city and
successfully presented a new face of an international standard city.
