Inclusive Playground for You and Me
What Is the Reason for Promoting the Park's
Specialization?
The renewal of the old park has also begun to reflect public's voice. In the past, the design of the
children's playground was almost the same, and the development of parks was simplified and
uniformed, lacking creativity. Playing games is a necessary part to children's life and growing
up, and also one of the important paths for learning and growing. It can improve children's
development of muscle strength, elevate the remembering and learning ability of the brain. That
was also the main purpose for mothers to promote the park's specialization. Therefore, with
the efforts of the Taiwan Parks and Playgrounds for Children by Children( a legal foundation,)
NGOs, and scholars, the planning and designing of a park began to incorporate the spirit of
environmental sustainability and inclusiveness. With public’s participation, the design of the
park is getting closer to the needs of users, the features of a park are emphasized, and more
diversified ways of playing games are developed.
What Is the “Inclusive” Playground?
“Inclusive” is a spirit, not a type of an instrument. It is in line with the spirit of equal
participation of Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Protection of the Rights
of Children playing, and Article 30, on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, providing
equal opportunities and participation for children and children with disabilities to enjoy arts,
entertainment, sports and leisure activities. It increases daily opportunities for children with
special needs in physical and mental and ordinary children to interact in a friendly environment,
so that children of different ages and those with special needs can experience various challenges
and fully develop their body, cognition and social ability. In addition to considering the
specializations and richness of the playgrounds’ space and facilities, it is also encouraged to set
up game facilities for the developing requirements for children of different ages. That would help
for their brain development at different stages, and build up a communion atmosphere when
children with different abilities are playing together. The inclusive atmosphere will attract more
adults and children to play along and increase the number of the playgrounds’ users.
