Why Do We Need “Green”?
"Parks and green spaces" have always been one of the indispensable public facilities in urban
construction. They are an important part of the cityscape and ecosystem. Although they are not as
economically beneficial as the development of houses and roads, the green resources are the "public
good" for everyone in the city. It meets the leisure needs of urban residents, providing places for rest,
communication, sports, play, wandering, or holding various events, etc... As the issues like climate
and social environment gain more and more attention, the role of park and green space in the city
is becoming more and more diversified, and the benefit it brings to urban living is also increasing.
Having parks and green spaces enhance the opportunity for citizens to keep exercising, enjoy nature,
relax the body and mind. It promotes social interaction and sightseeing. Furthermore, it can serve as
disaster prevention infrastructure, reduce air pollution, conserve water resources, reduce heat island
effects. It not only ease off the negative impacts of living in urban, but also move Taipei towards a
livable and healthy city. Many international researches have claimed that parks and green spaces
can be seen as the indirect economic benefits and the value can be measured. It is also a necessary
investment because its benefits are shared by all the people.
