Kendrick Lamar with Compton officials as he accepts the key to the city.
Even with all the contro- versy surrounding Beyoncé’s homage to the Black Pan- ther Party during the Super Bowl halftime show, many people may not be fully aware of the history of the BPP.
Filmmaker Stanley Nel- son explores the organiza- tion’s significance to the broader American culture in the documentary The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution.
Nelson uses rare archival footage and remarks of the people that were directly con-

The film features Kath- leen Cleaver, Jamal Joseph, and dozens of others.
The Black Panthers: Van- guard of The Revolution is scheduled to air February 16th at 9/8C on PBS’ Independent Lens. To check local listings visit pbs.org.

It was on the red carpet where Hollywood power play- ers discussed the recent back- lash Beyonce has received following the release of her track, “Formation,” during her Super Bowl performance.
“The amazing thing that she did is use this huge platform not only to promote her music but to make a social statement and to do something that was really, really important,” Zen- daya told us exclusively. “I loved it and I thought it was 100% necessary and people are going to be offended by us hav- ing pride and love for ourselves and raising awareness to issues that we have.”
MC Lyte chimed in, “People fail to understand is that you can be a huge pop star, but you still are Black. You still are African American and you still deal with it in certain ways.”
