A Brief History Of St. Peter Claver
St. Peter Claver Catholic School had its beginning in late 1893, when the Jesuits purchased an old Methodist Church on Morgan Street in Tampa.
On February 2, 1894, two members of the Sisters of the Holy Names began classes with sixteen students.
On the night of February 12, 1894, the building was burned by arsonists. Father William Tyrell, S.J., with the help of Bishop Moore, purchased a piece of property on the corner of Scott and Governor Streets in the Black community. The school re- opened in October, 1894.
The quality of education was such that seven years later, students successfully passed the Teacher’s Exami- nation and received certifi- cates from the Board of Public Instruction.
In 1904, Mother Katharine Drexel, foundress of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, donated money from her inheritance to St. Peter Caver School, which she had visited.
Ms. Blanche Arm- wood, class of 1902, is per- haps the most celebrated graduate of St. Peter Claver School. Armwood High School, here in Tampa, is named in her honor. Her family generously donated her papers to the archives at the University of South Florida, where students use the contents for primary scholarly research. Ms. Armwood’s bust appears on Tampa’s famous River- walk.
The first chapel for St. Peter Claver was set up on the second floor of the school in 1909.
The first church was built in 1915, with a gift from Mrs. I. D. Morrell, the sister of Mother Katharine Drexel, who was canonized as a Saint by the Roman Catholic Church in 2000. The Most Reverend Charles B. McLaughlin, the first Bishop of the Dio- cese of St. Petersburg, dedi- cated the present structure, located at 1203 N. Nebraska Avenue, on June 8, 1969.
The Middleton Alumni Association awarded two $1,000.00 scholarships re- cently, and donated funds to other programs at the school.
Jayla Key will attend Hillsborough Community College, and Elijah Hawkins will attend Florida Agriculture and Me- chanical University (FAMU).
The Alumni donated $1,000.00 to the Men of Vi- sion and The Women of Vi-
sion, which have chapters at Middleton.
The Alumni Association also donated $1,000.00 to help students with caps and gowns.
President Luvator Nel- son says, “Your member- ships and other fund raising donations are greatly appre- ciated and needed to continue the sup- port to the students at Mid- dleton Senior High School.”
