Guns, Drug Charges Net Convicted Felon 14 Years

   A federal judge sentenced a man to more than 14 years in federal prison. He pleaded guilty on July 27, 2021.
U. S. District
Judge Susan C. Buck- lew handed down a sentence of 14 years and 2 months in federal prison to 40-year-old Leon Grant, Jr., of St. Pe- tersburg.
He was charged with pos- session with the intent to dis- tribute fentanyl, methamphetamine, and crack cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and possession of firearms and ammunition by a convicted felon.
The court also ordered Grant to forfeit the firearms

and ammunition he had pos- sessed.
According to court docu- ments, federal agents, along with state and local law en- forcement agencies, investi- gated a series of credit union robberies committed in Hills- borough and Pinellas Coun-
ties in 2019. As part of the in- vestigation, the Federal Bu- reau of Investigation obtained a search warrant for Grant’s home in St. Peters- burg.
On January 22, 2020, state and federal investiga- tors searched Grant’s home and seized more than 36 grams of fentanyl, 26 grams of methamphetamine, and 35 grams of crack cocaine. In- vestigators also located three firearms and ammunition in Grant’s bedroom, including an AR-15 rifle and two pis- tols. Grant admitted he was a drug dealer and said he kept the firearms in his home for protection. He had previously been convicted of several felony charges.
Hit And Run Driver Kills 71-Year-Old Bicyclist
Law enforcement officers are currently searching for a driver in a fatal hit and run accident. The accident took place Friday, shortly after 2 a.m.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver of a BMWS SUV was traveling eastbound on State Road 60. A 71-year-old man from Dover was riding in the bicy- cle lane eastbound on Lake- wood Drive.
For an unknown reason, the driver of the SUV trav- eled into the bicycle lane and struck the bicyclist. The bicy- clist died at the scene as a re- sult of his injuries.
After the collision, the driver of the SUV continued eastbound before turning south onto Hilltop Road.
The suspect vehicle is be- lieved to be a 2016-2019 BMW X-1 SUV with signifi- cant damage.

      Two Die In Single-Car Accident
The Florida Highway Pa- trol is investigating an acci- dent that claimed the lives of two people. The accident took place on I-75 near Milepost 235.
According to the accident investigators, the vehicle was traveling southbound on I- 275 around 6:30 a. m., Sun- day. For undetermined reasons, the driver lost con- trol of the vehicle and it de-
parted the highway. It rotated back across the highway, en- tered the inside shoulder, and collided with several trees in the median.
Both occupants died as a result of their injuries. The driver was a 72-year-old man from Elmore, Ohio. His pas- senger was a 75-year-old man from Genoa, Ohio.
The investigation is con- tinuing.
