Begin by inserting the fid into the cover about one half inch below the
cover’s hatch mark. Make the insertion carefully so the fid does not pick
up fibers from the adjacent core. Run the fid through the loop made by
the empty cover and bring it out as close as you can to the point where
you have just threaded the cover into the core. Now wedge the tip of the
core into the head of the fid. Pull on the fid to draw the core back into the
cover, as shown.
6. Continue to draw the core through the cover until all the excess has
been fed through. Detach the fid and smooth out the loop to ease any
bulges. Then start working the bunched portion of the cover—which you
pushed back into the standing part in the second step (page 72)—
forward over the throat of the eye.
