2. Pull the rest of the core from the working end of the cover. Then
continue extracting the core from the standing part—pushing back the
cover as you go—until you have pulled out an additional 10 inches. Tape
the tip of the core. Starting at the hatch mark made on the core, measure
off four inches and designate the spot with two pencil marks, as shown.
From this double hatch mark, measure six inches to the junction with the
cover; identify this spot with three hatch marks.
3. Now comes the actual splicing procedure of running the cover into the
core with the fid. Insert the looped end of the fid into the hollow core at
the triple hatch mark, thread it through the core and push it out at the
double mark. Tightly retape the tip of the cover to give it a point. Slip this
