A Knife Lanyard

No sailor should ever be caught without his rigging knife, and a
decorative assurance that the knife will always be by his side is a lanyard
like the one shown on page 89. Knotted out of seine twine, it has a loop

at one end for threading it into a belt, and a similar loop at the other end
for the snap hook that holds the knife. Between the Turk’s heads at the
throats of the loops are a series of square knots. The work’s intricate
appearance belies its simplicity—anyone who can tie his shoes can make
               a lanyard in an afternoon.
