Page 83 - Knots You Need to Know Easy-to-Follow Guide to the 30 Most Useful Knots
P. 83
Knowing how to tie a knot quickly can be the difference between the
safety and security of crew and belongings and losing something
overboard.
The quickest, most reliable way to tie two rope ends together—even with
lines of unequal size—is by making a sheet bend using the method
shown here. Cross the working end of the heavier rope over the lighter.
Grasp the crossed lines as shown (1) and twist them—as in making a
bowline—to form a small loop, with the end coming up through it. Pass
the end around behind the standing part and back down through the loop
(2). Draw up carefully and tightly (3) before putting any strain on the line.
