MARGIE SERNIK
Director, Media Relations
I graduated college and started my first official job in 2014 at a
boutique PR agency in Miami. When I first started, we were a two-
person team, which allowed me to grow rapidly. Within six months, we
hired two more employees and brought in double the number of
clients. Two years later, my boyfriend (now husband) wanted to move
back to New York City, where he is originally from. I told my boss of my
plan to move, and she proposed the opportunity for me to open an
office for the agency in New York. Although I was happy and
comfortable in Miami, I cast my fears aside and accepted the
opportunity.
I arrived in New York to instant changes in my life. I went from being in an office with a team to being in a tiny
one-person office at a WeWork facility in the city as the Director of PR and Business Development. Although I met
a lot of people thanks to the WeWork community, I felt quite lonely at the office. After two years, I realized that
although everything sounded fantastic on paper and I was proud of what I had achieved, I wasn’t exactly happy or
fulfilled with my job. Although it didn’t work out the way I envisioned when I accepted the offer, I consider this the
“power moment” in my career. I learned that in life, you must let go of all fears and accept every opportunity that
comes your way. However, I also learned that your career isn’t one path – it’s always evolving and changing with
you. I also learned that I personally work best with a team, and not alone.
