Petals of Her
by Melanie Collier '23
Tired. Wounded. Heartbroken. Rose
had come back from battle barely
able to hold herself up, carrying
her heavy sword. She had seen so
much horror in the past days she
didn’t know if she could go on
any longer. The only thing
keeping the woman going was the
knowledge that her younger sister
was on the battlefield as well,
only on the opposing side. They
but she always kept tabs on her,
hadn’t seen each other in years
making sure she was safe. Now
believing that they may never get
the chance to reconcile, Rose had
decided to send a sign of love to
her sister. As a child, before
the separation of the two had
occurred, her sister would always
give her sister a rose whenever
she was scared to show
encouragement and love. Thinking
that it may be the last thing she
will ever do, Rose collected all
the strength she had left and
sent her carrier pigeon, carrying
a single rose, to her dear
sister. She hoped she had
received it; she hoped she would
live to see her sister again, but
as her vision darkened, Rose
didn’t know how much hope would
save her.
