MD20 CENTENNIAL CONVENTION
MEMBERSHIP THROUGH SERVICE WORKSHOP
This workshop aimed to show how Lions can increase club Photo Journal, Courtesy Lion Shirley Maddox
membership by actively engaging like-minded individuals
passionate about community service.
Brooklyn First Responders Lions Club was one of the three
selected Specialty Clubs that presented. Lion Dimple Willabus,
Charter President, described, “ Specialty Clubs bring together a
group of individuals who share a common interest and passion
in addition to a commitment to service.”
During the pandemic, Lion Dimple, a member of another Lions
Club, was busy collecting food and face masks from various
Baltimore and New Jersey companies to distribute to needy
communities. Despite his stressful 18-hour shifts, her New
York City Police Officer/husband assisted her. “We First
Responders need help too! Are the Lions helping and/or
providing service to First Responders?” he asked.
This question motivated Lion Dimple to envision chartering a
Lions Club of 22 First Responders. Currently, there are 40
members - First Responders, NYPD officers, community
business owners, and other service-minded individuals
responded, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is -
what are you doing for others?”
The ideology of the First Responders Lions Club is to ensure
that all members are “whole” before stretching themselves to
serve the community.
