                                                            December 5, 2021

    Dear Leos and Lions,

It is my pleasure to report that the Leos of our District continue to leap on the service challenges in our communities. On October 2 , we
                                                                                                      nd
began “Teaming Together” with the Lions to protect the environment and develop Community Gardens in Brooklyn and at the VFW Post
    #5298 in Queens.
In Brooklyn, Mr. Gregory Anderson of the Green Thumb Organization engaged the combined group in educational workshops to
develop the skills and strategies for success in horticulture. At the Queens location, Lion Audrey-Pam Thomas (Laurelton Lions Club), an
avid and well-versed gardener, shared her expertise and coached the group on the basics of soil preparation, planting and harvesting.

On October 23 , the gardening team of Leos and Lions was granted permission to establish another community garden on a small
                      rd
split of land at Jehu’s Table in Brooklyn. Although they were still recruits in the art of garden cultivation and management, they
demonstrated an understanding about the importance of weeding, soil preparation and strategic seed planting. Beds were prepared for Fall
produce that included beets, onions, broccoli, carrots, lettuce, beans, and astro arugula. Additional furrows were created for the planting of
    spring bulbs and rose bushes.
The team of environmentalists / horticulturists invites you to join us for the next Leo event on Saturday November 20th as we
harvest at the Community Gardens in Brooklyn and Queens. At the same time, the Leos will be collecting items for their Veterans’ Project.
    Hope to see you there!

District 20-K1 thanks the Leo clubs for their generous donation of appropriate gardening gloves and beautiful bright blue gardening
    aprons.
On October 16 , the Leos sponsored a virtual Vision Care Workshop for Youth. The guest speaker was Dr. Irene Frantzis of the
                      th
SUNY Eye Center. This workshop was very informative and presented information on common eye conditions and diseases in youth. She
discussed different eye exams, tests and procedures to assess the health of the eye. She emphasized that unusual symptoms should be
brought to the attention of the eye care specialist.

The event ended with a fun word scrambler game and the winner received a special pin.
Can you unscramble these vision-related word?
