Trump: U.S. may rethink decision to exit surveillance treaty
By DEB RIECHMANN
Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Thurs-
day that Russian violations make it untenable for the U.S.
to stay in a treaty that permits 30-plus nations to conduct
observation flights over each other’s territory, but he hin-
ted it’s possible the U.S. will reconsider the decision.
The Open Skies Treaty that governs the unarmed overf-
lights was initially set up to promote trust and avert con-
flict between the U.S. and Russia. The Trump administra-
tion informed other members of the treaty that it will pull
out in six months because Russia is violating the pact and
imagery collected during the flights can be obtained
quickly at less cost from U.S. or commercial satellites.
“Russia didn’t adhere to the treaty. So until they adhe-
re, we will pull out, but there’s a very good chance we’ll
make a new agreement or do something to put that
agreement back together,” Trump told reporters at the
White House before leaving for Michigan.
“So I think what’s going to happen is we’re going to pull
out and they (the Russians) are going to come back and In this June 28, 2019, file photo, President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin walk
