Nurse Anto : “That’s excellent. Now, I’m going to clean your
oxygen mask and tubing to prevent any risk of
infection. We’ll use a disinfectant solution and
store the equipment in a clean, dry place for the
next use. If the equipment is cleaned regularly,
it will stay safe and effective for longer.”
Mr. Joni : “That sounds good. I want to make sure
everything stays safe to use.”
Vocabulary: Tools Used for Patient Oxygenation
Spirometry : A device that measures lung volumes and capacities.
Oxygen tubing : A flexible tube that transports oxygen from an oxygen source (ex. oxygen
tank) to the patient.
Flowmeter : A device that controls the oxygen flow rate, ensuring the correct amount is
administered to the patient.
Oximetry : The non-invasive assessment of arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) utilizing a
pulse oximeter.
Flow control valve : A mechanism attached to oxygen equipment that regulates the amount of
oxygen released from a tank or concentrator, ensuring precise delivery.
Low-flow nasal : It is a device used to deliver a small and constant flow of oxygen through
cannula two soft prongs placed in the nostrils. It provides oxygen at flow rates making
it ideal for patients who need mild to moderate oxygen support.
Simple face mask : It is a device that covers the nose and mouth, delivering oxygen at moderate
flow rates. It is often used for patients requiring short-term oxygen therapy
and provides a higher concentration of oxygen compared to a nasal cannula.
Venturi mask : It is a type of oxygen delivery device that provides a precise concentration
of oxygen by mixing it with room air. It uses color-coded adapters to regulate
oxygen flow and is suitable for patients needing controlled oxygen therapy,
especially those with chronic respiratory conditions.
Non-rebreather : It is a high-flow oxygen delivery device that features a reservoir bag and a
mask one-way valve to prevent re-inhalation of exhaled air. It is typically used in
emergencies or for critically ill patients.
