Language Focus: Communicating the Medication Administration
Below are some useful expressions used to confirm the Five Rights, previous medication and allergies,
and possible side effects in administering medication.
Confirming ”Right Patient” "Just to confirm, are you [patient’s name]?"
"Can you verify your name and one other identifier, like your address or
birthdate?"
"Can I see your ID bracelet to make sure I have the right patient?"
Confirming ”Right "Your doctor prescribed [medication name] for you. Is that what you were
Medication” expecting?"
"Let me double-check, you’re supposed to receive [medication name]
today, correct?"
"Is this the medication you regularly receive at this time?"
