All knots utilize friction, or the resistance created when two things glide
against each other. The difference between a good knot and a bad one is that
a good knot better utilizes friction so that it doesn’t come undone. However,
there are variations between different kinds of ropes. A good knot should also
be possible to undo.
Even in everyday life it’s worth knowing some effective and sturdy knots.
Have you ever tried to make a pretty bow on a package, without success?
There are knots for all occasions. They have a few different names that can
be good to know.
Practice makes perfect
The old expression “practice makes perfect” is highly applicable to knots. Try
making the knot by yourself until you can tie it without thinking about what
you are doing. The best kind of memory is what’s known as “muscle
memory.” An example: Once you’ve learned to ride a bike you will always
remember how to do it. Remembering knots works the same way.
Now it’s time to start practicing the knots you think will be useful for you.
One suggestion: In the beginning it’s easier if you use a rope the same width
as your finger.
