Chayei Adam - K’lal 142 - The Order of the Tekiahs

]3[ Chazal understand that there must be at least three shevarim one after
              another. 10

]4[ Chazal understand that the length of a tekiah is the same length as a
                     11
teruah. Accordingly, [when blowing] tekiah-shevarim-teruah-tekiah which is
blown in case the Torah defines teruah as both shevarim-teruah, one must extend
the length of each tekiah [to be as long] as shevarim-teruah. [And] when blowing
tekiah-shevarim-tekiah, one must extend the tekiah to be as long as three
shevarim which are three slightly longer sounds, and [when blowing] tekiah-
teruah-tekiah which we blow in case teruah means short sobs, one need not blow
tekiahs longer than the length of the teruah. If one blows a tekiah which was too
short for that particular order, he does not fulfill his obligation.

]5[ The same is true of shevarim-teruah in that if one blew them shorter than
we will write below, he doesn’t fulfill his obligation. However, it is permitted to
                                   12
lengthen the tekiah or the shevarim or the teruah, and one can likewise blow
              four or five shevarim. 13

]6[ Chazal understand that the length of a teruah [meaning that] which we call
a teruah, should be three cries. However, the authorities disagree: Some say that

                                                        םדו רשב
explain that this is only if he doesn’t interrupt that the length of a tekiah is the same as that
with a different sound of the shofar (as of a teruah and that the length of a teruah is
explained below, note 30). the same as three shevarim, which differs from
the mishna which says it is like three yebavos.
              10. A beraisa (Rosh Hashana 33b) Most rishonim understand this as a dispute
mentions three shevarim as a reference point and is the basis for blowing both shevarim and
in assessing the length of the tekiah and teruahs (as above, note 6). Regardless, it is
teruah. Although the Rokeach writes that two clear that the Torah mandates that one blow a
shevarim is sufficient, most rishonim tekiah at least as long as a teruah. Since we
understand that one must blow three are uncertain as to the definition of a teruah,
shevarim blasts. we blow multiple variations to fulfill all
                            ה
                                                           possibilities (i.e. shevarim, teruah, and
