Chayei Adam - K’lal 142 - The Order of the Tekiahs

]7[ Ideally, one must fulfill all of these opinions and the baal tokeah must be
careful to extend the tekiahs of tekiah-shevarim-teruah-tekiah so that each tekiah
measures eighteen sounds, and that the tekiahs of tekiah-shevarim-tekiah and of
tekiah-teruah-tekiah should measure at least nine sounds, because then he will
fulfill his obligation according to every opinion because he is permitted to extend
them as we have explained in siman 5. Also, one should be careful to keep each
shever of tekiah-shevarim-tekiah shorter than nine sounds, for if he extends it
more than nine sounds, it will be considered a tekiah according to all opinions,
and then it can no longer be considered a shever, but rather a tekiah. Even

b’dieved, if he blew a shever which extended nine sounds, he must go back and
                                17
blow them again. Also, ideally, one should ensure that the teruah extends nine
              sounds [in length]. 18

]8[ Every sound of the shofar must be complete and sounded in one breath, as
the posuk says teruah, and not teruos, and so if one breaks in the middle [he
                                                19
hasn’t blown] a complete teruah. The same applies to the tekiahs. Therefore, one
must be careful to blow the three shevarim in one breath; although shevarim are
broken sounds, [the Torah] doesn’t intend that one should separate each shever
from the next but rather that each shever should be recognizable unto itself, and
not successive [sounds] like [those of] a teruah. B’dieved, if he didn’t blow them in
one breath, he does not fulfill his obligation. 20

Consequently, since the set of shevarim-teruah 17. Since a shever which extends nine
is blown in case this is the Torah’s definition of sounds or more is a tekiah according to all
‘teruah’, its accompanying tekiah must be as opinions.

18 short sounds. Although the Shulchan Aruch 18. In following with the opinion of

poskim is that this was written in error. Many
authorities however write that the tekiah 19. Most rishonim write that since the
should be a bit longer than eighteen short three shevarim of tekiah-shevarim-teruah, and
sounds, since three shevarim is slightly longer the (three or nine) teruah blasts of tekiah-
that nine sounds of a teruah. (Taz, Gra, Mishna teruah-tekiah are one sound, one may not
