Chayei Adam - K’lal 142 - The Order of the Tekiahs

breath, he does not fulfill his obligation. Therefore, there are some places that
always blow shevarim-teruah in two breaths, even l’chatchila, and there are some
places that blow in a way that fulfills both opinions, 24 which is that during the
tekiahs blown before musaf, they blow [shevarim-teruah] in a single breath,
because according to the first opinion one does not fulfill his obligation even
b’dieved [if he pauses in the middle]. Even if the halacha follows Rabeinu Tam that
people don’t moan and cry in the same breath, still, some say that Rabeinu Tam
agrees that one fulfills his obligation nonetheless. [Then,] in order to fulfill the
second opinion who understands that Rabeinu Tam holds that one does not fulfill

his obligation even b’dieved if he blew it in one breath, we then - according to our
local custom that we blow tekiah-shevaim-teruah-tekiah after each beracha -
should blow them in two breaths, as we will explain below in siman 17. 25

]10[ Therefore, the makri who calls out to the baal toke’ah the order of the
blasts so that he shouldn’t make a mistake, should be careful, that in the tekiahs
before musaf he should call out “shevarim-teruah” at one time, so that the baal
toke’ah should be careful to blow them in a single breath. Even during the tekiahs
of musaf, he should call out teruah without delay; even though we wrote that
these should be blown in two breaths, it is nevertheless forbidden to pause for
more than a breath, and calling out will take longer than a breath. Since we blow
[it] in case we need [to blow both] shevarim [and] teruah, and although according

that b’dieved one who blows them without shevarim-teruah in a single breath, in
pause fulfills his obligation. The Terumas following with the opinion of most rishonim,
Hadeshen disagrees and understands Rabeinu and pausing in the middle of the shofar blasts
Tam’s understanding as an absolute during the chazan’s repetition of musaf, in
requirement. order to fulfill the opinion of Rabeinu Tam.
                                                           Although the Shulchan Aruch recommends
              24. In order to fulfill both opinions, the that one who fears heaven should do so, the
Terumas Hadeshen suggests that when the Rema writes disregards this approach, writing
shofar is blown before musaf, one should blow that one should always pause between the
