Chayei Adam - K’lal 144 - Laws of Erev Yom Kippur
]17[ People are very concerned if their candles go out. In my opinion, there is
no concern because sometimes they extinguish because of wind or heat.
Nevertheless, since people are concerned, it is proper that a person give his
candle to the shamas and not take care of it at all. The extra ones should be put
in the shul. Otherwise, people won’t daven maariv on motzei Yom Kippur.
Therefore, it is proper to do as I have written. 72

from wearing it on Yom Kippur, because it is a yom tov. Certainly, it is forbidden
to put socks or beans in one’s socks as a way of doing teshuva. It appears to me
that during the rest of the year this is also forbidden as this is the way of the

life so that you don’t sin and you should have desire for Torah and mitzvos, your
eyes should look straight, your mouth should speak wisdom and your heart
should think in fear [of Heaven], your hands should be busy with mitzvos, your
feet should run to do the will of your Father in Heaven, and He should give you
sons and daughters who are righteous who are involved in Torah and mitzvos all

(as we have written above) and leaving some (Devarim 14:1) forbids inflicting wounds on
in the shul so that there will be adequate light oneself in mourning over the dead. We see
in the shul to daven maariv on motzei Yom that the nevi’ei ha’baal (prophets of the Baal
Kippur. idol] did the same thing in the service of idols.
Therefore, reasons the Chayei Adam, that
