Legacy ?
Ex-colonial powers are blind to the societal & cultural distortions we have left behind
"Africans believe in something that is difficult to render in English. We call it ‘ubuntu,
botho’. It means the essence of being human. You know when it is there and when it is
absent. It speaks about humaneness, gentleness, hospitality, putting yourself out on
behalf of others, being vulnerable. It embraces compassion and toughness. It recognizes
that my humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together."
Desmond Tutu
The Atlantic Slave Trade
The effects of this resonate in today’s Africa. It forced Africans into a cultural conflict
between African communitarianism and m’zungu commodification. This conflict continues
today. It can easily be seen in matters concerning the ownership and sale of landed
property.
The legacy of the m’zungu slave trade in other deeper ways. As Nathan Nunn and his
colleagues have shown, the commercial value put on African slaves who had a natural
immunity to malaria has led to a long-lasting insecurity and mistrust of close neighbours
and family members in parts of today’s Africa.
