2. It is the responsibility of the Executive Director to assure all applicable staff are trained on
    the medication procedures.

3. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the issuance of medication.

Staff instructions for medication issuance

1. Be on site and ready to issue medications at the designated time.
2. Inform and remind residents, if necessary, when their medication(s) are to be taken.
3. Locate the resident’s medication bag/bin and place in front of them. Staff will hand the

    resident a bottle or medication pack, have the resident indicate the name of the medication
    and say how many pills are being removed. These pills are placed on a medication tray.
    The staff observer will ensure that the number of pills removed are the amount that are
    placed on the tray. The staff person will observe to ensure that medications are not secretly
    kept in the palm of the hand. The staff member will check the dosage on the bottle to
    ensure that the right number of pills are being taken. Residents will take the medications in
    front of staff.
4. The staff member will fill out the MAR for each resident as they pick up their medication,
    sign, date, amount given and have the resident initial as well.
5. Staff members will prompt resident to check for the need of refills.
6. Return the sealed bag/bin to the lock box or secure area. Do not lay it down to remove
    another bag.
7. Do not issue medication to more than one resident at a time. Do not leave the issue site
    until all medications are locked in the storage cabinet. Never leave without securing the
    medication cabinet.
8. Never give the key to anyone else except designated staff.
9. Never give medication to anyone other than who the medication is issued for.
10. If a resident runs out of medication and does not make efforts to refill the medication,
    notify the therapist.
11. Prevent, respond to, and report any medication error, adverse reaction, or overdose to
    management.

Resident Responsibility for Issuance of Medication

1. It is the responsibility of all residents to be aware of the Medication times.
2. It is the responsibility of the resident to be on site and ready to take medications at the

    prescribed time.
3. It is the responsibility of the resident to re-order medications as needed and to maintain

    contact with the physician responsible for the monitoring of the medication.

Medication Services

Staff will be able to provide resident’s information as to where they may find information about
their medication when requested/or on an as needed basis. This will include:

1. The prescribed medication’s anticipated results.
2. The prescribed mediation’s potential adverse reactions.
3. The prescribed medication’s potential side effects.
