REFUSAL OF MEDICAL SERVICES

POLICY

To ensure that residents are receiving adequate medical services. It is the policy of Hopess that in the
event a resident refuses medical and/or nursing services that the resident be assessed to determine if a
higher level of care for the resident is needed, and that their refusal of medical services is documented.

         PROCEDURE

         1. When a resident refuses medical and/or nursing service, Hopess medical personnel will be
            notified.

         2. Staff will also document in the resident’s file that the resident refused services and that the
            Hopess medical practitioner was notified.

         3. Residents are allowed to refuse medical services, however, assessment of resident’s physical
            and emotional needs must be done to ensure that the resident is able to make this decision and
            that their decision to refuse medical services will not be detrimental to their health and well-
            being.
