At the end of term, eight excited pupils piled onto a school Youth Speaks Young Climbers
minibus and headed south. After a stopover at Oxford Youth
Hostel (and a rather nice breakfast) the team boarded the Tall
Ships Catamaran, setting sail for a week of sun, sea and sky.

Pupils soon learnt the ropes, a whole new language in sailing
terms, pondered over charts and buoyage… and experimented
with the best way to cook and clean as a team on a boat.

We travelled from Portsmouth to Weymouth and back, stopping
over at Cowes, Yarmouth, Poole and Lulworth Cove.

After over 100 miles of sailing, fish and chips, ice creams, pirate
parties, two lost footballs and numerous games of Cluedo, the
team achieved their RYA Start Yachting Awards before waving
goodbye to the Skipper, Ricky and their home for the week, the
 Tall Ships Cat.

Every year the Rotary club run a national competition
Year 7 & 8 designed to encourage and support young people
seeking to develop their skills in speaking and organising
100 Nautical Miles meetings. The Rotary Club of Llandudno were pleased
to welcome a team from St David’s College on 7th
March 2017, and give a hearing to the all male trio as
they conducted a debate in front of an audience of 25
on the unfashionable topic of ‘Discrimination Against
Men.’ Each of the adjudicators (President Mike Clutton
and Rotarians Mike Dean and Chris Drew) trod the fine
line between showing enthusiastic support for the
team’s performance without espousing the case being
made too enthusiastically! The team go on to represent
the club at district finals to be held in Wrexham on 3rd
March and then, we hope, onto national finals in April.
