expense, where he secured a degree in business. The Saudi government
then funded his securing a Masters Degree in Business at UCLA. When
he returned to Saudi Arabia thereafter, he was made Minister of Agricul-
ture and held that position for a number of years.
I should record a potentially explosive incident that occurred
in 1958. One evening Jean and I were at a party attended by a number
of members of our district management. At about 10 p.m. we received

which was a ¼ mile away. Larry Rushmer, the District Manager, Larry
Crampton, the Assistant District Manager, and I got in a car and drove
out to the intermediate camp. The mob had been stirred up by some
Palestinians for reasons we were unable to determine. The mob was

and burn it down. Larry Crampton immediately drove back to the ware-
house in camp and got a group of axe handles, which he brought back as
potential weapons to defend ourselves. Someone entered the signal that

there. I think the leaders of the mob had no fear whatever of us because
we were outnumbered at least 30:1, but they were totally nonplussed by

water pressure of the pump) could knock down anyone facing it.
Word had also been sent to the local Emir, who commands the
government police. The governor of the province, Saud ibn Jiluwi, had

about 20 miles away. Saud ibn Jiluwi had been with King Abdul Azziz
in his original coup to gain political power in Riyadh. Saud ibn Jiluwi
was renowned for the harshness of action he took against any misdeeds.
The word spread in the mob. Gradually they dispersed and we were able
to leave without any damage being done to people or property. In the
next couple of days, the Saudi Arab police arrested a number of Pales-
tinians and they were promptly deported. There were no more political
riots or similar actions in the remaining time we were in Saudi Arabia.
