was one of the nicest compliments I’d ever received. While I thought
teaching at the university level could be very stimulating, I did not want
to raise my children outside of the United States. Richard and Janet had
already spent the majority of their lives outside of the United States and
I wanted them to be Americans in how they felt as well as the citizen-

In June, Jean selected things she wanted shipped to San Francisco so
that we could set up housekeeping immediately after getting home.
These materials were turned over to the company for packing and ship-
ping by a boat and we gave my brother Gordon’s address in Lafayette
            as the destination.

On the night of June 26, Jean started having labor pains and we
took her down to Dhahran in an ambulance to the hospital there. The
pains soon ceased and we were sent back to Ras Tanura (at the time I
thought how nice it would be if the baby was born on June 26 because
that was my father’s birthday). On Friday July 17, we rented a car and
drove to Dhahran for the day. Cindi and Vicki spent most of the after-
noon in and out of the water in the Dhahran swimming pool. Jean had
begun labor pains during the day and as they became closer and sharper,
we took the girls to the portable home next to the hospital where “la-
dies-in-waiting” stayed. I helped Jean walk the remaining distance to
