Marriott hotel. After sightseeing in Washington for a couple of days,
we drove to central Virginia to visit my old boss, Bela Barnes, and his
wife, who had retired there. After an evening and morning visit with
the Barnes’ we drove west through West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and Il-
linois. We went to Nauvoo and Carthage Jail sites for the education of
Janet and Richard. We then drove west to Salt Lake City. Helen and Stan
Lakin were away on a trip and we had been invited to stay at their house
while visiting friends and relatives there.

Jean has always been a superb planner and organizer as well
as a devoted mother. One illustration of this was how she handled the
milk supply for baby Alice. Before leaving Saudi Arabia Jean boiled in-
numerable bottles and the water in them. It’s well known that a change
of water, even though the water is free of bacteria, can upset a baby’s
digestive system. As a result of her planning, each day between Ras
Tanura and New York Jean could add the dried baby formula to the
water and baby Alice would have exactly the same milk to drink. In
New York Jean was able to do the same thing so that, as we traveled
across the country, the baby had the same milk until we arrived in Salt
Lake. The older kids treated Alice like a live doll and she was a well and
            happy baby all the way.

We were lucky that Vicki, who had contracted mumps from
Cindi, did not come down with it until after our arrival in Salt Lake.
As a result, we were able to stay at Honey and Stan’s home comfort-
ably while Vicki recovered. Richard and Janet needed to get into school
because Richard would be starting as a freshman in high school and
Janet as a junior. We drove across Nevada with our station wagon fully
loaded. Unfortunately, we had been advised to buy a station wagon with
a 6-cylinder engine, which was really underpowered. As a result, when
we drove over the old curving road across the Sierra summit we were
so slow we felt like walking! When we got to Lafayette we stayed over-
night with Gord and Jeanette. The next day we occupied a home in the
Sunset Village area of Lafayette that Jeanette had reserved for us. We
lived how it was 10-20 degrees warmer and less overcast than Berkeley.
