the hospital door and the medical personnel took over. Her own doctor
was unavailable but our new baby was delivered about 20 minutes later.
Richard and I had been sure we were going to have a baby boy, but it
turned out it was Alice Jean who had emerged from the womb. I had al-
ways liked the names of Jean and Alice. Jean agreed to naming the baby
Alice Jean and to using the name Alice in reference to her. Jean and I
got a kick out of what happened next. She called Richard in Ras Tanura
to tell him he had another baby sister. His answer was, Thats all right
Mom, you tried!
Two days after Alice was born I was at work and intending to
drive to Dhahran that afternoon to bring Jean and the baby home. At

rying our new baby. Everyone was amazed to see her. Jean had gotten
up early, been released from the hospital, hired an Arab taxi, and been
driven the one-hour ride from Dhahran to Ras Tanura. Jean was beam-
ing with pride at the surprise and everyone wanted to look at the new
baby. I took her home and our new baby was ensconced in a crib in
the large trunk closet in our house. She has been teased ever since by
her brother and sisters about being kept in a closet. In fact, the closet
was the size of a small room. Soon, all the children were bringing their
friends to come see their new baby sister.
I especially hated to leave our friends the Rowland Corry and
Craig Wayman families who had been our very good friends and fellow
church members in Ras Tanura. Ralph Devenney was appointed to be
my successor in Ras Tanura. Ralph was a bright and capable fellow and
our wives and children had been friends for several years. Ralph was
extremely kind in acceding to anything I wanted in leaving.
