The clean oil storage tank should be periodically drained and thoroughly cleaned. If
the area where the storage tanks are located is dusty, it may be desirable to install a
filter in the tank’s vent line. If water contamination is persistent or excessive, a
desiccant breather may be required.
Storage and handling of oils can be found in TI 1000-0099L. The following conditions
apply to oil used for Jenbacher 3 Series generator sets:
• Proper storage in buildings (recommended)
• The room must be clean and dry keep the temperature and air humidity
constant
• Make sure opened drums are properly sealed again
• Avoid storage in direct sunlight and under -5 °C
• Protect against rain and snow
• Store barrels horizontally not vertically, with the bung hole at the bottom
• Make sure opened drums are properly sealed again (no water must be
allowed to get into the oil)
• If stored for extended periods, carefully roll the drums once every 2 months
to mix the oil
Oil Samples
Oil sampling should be done in accordance with TI 1000-0112. Always take oil samples
with the engine running completely normally under load. When sampling, it is
imperative that the operator drain off approx. 0.3 l of oil before taking the actual
sample. After taking the oil sample, send it to a laboratory together with the sampling
report sheet without delay. The time
between taking the sample and its arrival at the laboratory must not exceed 5 days.
There are no exceptions!
When taking a sample, it is a must that the correct data is recorded and sent to the lab.
Often, these analysis results are used to make assessments for troubleshooting
purposes. If the information is skewed, then the troubleshooting based on these
samples becomes inaccurate. See example below.
