II. BIOLOGICAL BASED THERAPY
3. OZONE THERAPY
Ozone (O3) is a controversial gas because, owing to its potent oxidant properities,
it exerts damaging effects on the respiratory tract and yet it has been used for decades as
a therapy. The disinfectant activity of O3 is widely been used however the use of ozone
in medical therapy is still controversial. Ozone is found naturally in the body. The white
cells produce ozone as part of an immune response. Something your body makes
naturally cannot be harmful to the body. Medical grade Ozone, when used according to
established guidelines has an unparalleled safety record.
Definition of Ozone
Ozone is composed of three oxygen atoms instead of two. It is the addition of the third
Oxygen atom which makes it supercharged oxygen and gives it all its wonderful medical
properties. Oxygen you breathe is present in the air as a pair of oxygen atoms.
Ozone therapy can induce the following biological responses
1. Improves blood circulation and oxygen delivery in ischemic tissue owing to NO,
CO, and increase levels of intra-erythrocytic 2, 3-DPG.
2. Enhances general metabolism by improving oxygen delivery.
3. Upregulates cellular antioxidant enzymes and induction of HO-1 and HSP70.
4. Induces a mild activation of the immune system and enhances the release of
growth factors.
5. Does not procure acute or late side effects.
6. Procures a surprising wellness in most patients, probably via the stimulation of the
neuroendocrine system.
7. Activates neuro-protective systems.
Medical Properties of Ozone
1) Ozone is a potent regulator of the immune system. This means that when the immune
system is activated (autoimmunity) ozone will calm it down. Also, when the immune
system is depleted (chronic infections, cancer, etc.) ozone will stimulate it. This occurs
by ozone‘s unique interaction with white cells to release immune messengers called
cytokines.
