The single most important task required to manage disappointment is knowing that your partner loves you, and knowing that your partner knows you love them. Having that security is an inoculation against disappointment and the fear we all have about being abandoned. When partners feel secure in love, they can listen to disappointment. Sounds simple — isn’t always simple. If you want to make your partner feel secure you can say the “super I love you’s.”
“Do you know how much I love you?”
“Do you know how much I appreciate you?”
“Do you know how attracted I am to you?”
“Do you know how proud I am of how smart you are?”
There are others which don’t count as much like:
“Do you know how amazing your eyes, boobs, butt, hair, package etc. look?”
(Those can go a long way for some but you have got to appreciate the person as well as the body parts. )
I often ask couples if they ever say things like this to one another, and one partner says:
“I say things like that all the time.”
