1) One of the main mechanisms of this evil process is reverse
transcription. In 1970, three researchers (the American oncologist
Howard M. Temin, the Japanese virologist Satoshi Mizutani and the
American virologist David Baltimore) working independently
discovered an enzyme capable of synthesizing proviral DNA from the
RSV RNA genome. RSV is an enveloped virus with a negative-sense,
single-stranded, non-segmented RNA genome. The enzyme was called
RNA-directed DNA, commonly referred to as reverse transcriptase.
This discovery led to the identification of a unique family of viruses
(Retroviridae). The understanding of their pathogenesis stimulated the
discovery of other infectious agents causing cancer. In 1975 Temin,
Baltimore and Dulbecco (mentor of Temin and Baltimore) received the
Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine “(…) for their discoveries
concerning the interaction between tumor viruses and the genetic
material of the cell.”
In the early ‘80s the HTLV-I and HTLV-II retroviruses that cause
leukemia were discovered. A retrovirus is a type of virus that inserts a
copy of its RNA genome into the DNA of a host cell that is invaded,
thus changing its genome. By 1983, HIV was isolated and identified as
the causative agent of AIDS. HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) is
a Lentivirus, a subgroup of Retroviruses that cause deadly chronic
