1. The HIV virus binds to receptors on the membrane of the host cell,
merges with its surface and enters the cell. 108 The capsid containing the
genome and proteins of the virus then enters the cell.
2. Enzymes remove the proteins of the viral capsid. As soon as the
capsid shell disintegrates, HIV/RNA, reverse transcriptase, integrase
and other viral proteins enter the host cell.
3. Reverse transcriptase transcribes viral RNA into hybrid DNA.
