II.II. How mRNA works
A vaccine based on mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) reverses
the usual biological succession of events necessary to produce the
effective ‘attenuated’ vaccines that humanity has used so far. In
biological terms, this usual succession is called transcription in which
the double strand of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) transcribes or copies
the single strand of RNA molecules, which it then incorporates and
transforms into proteins. 103
Otherwise, reverse transcription (or RNA-directed DNA
polymerase) takes place when, for example, the HIV-1 lentivirus
(which causes AIDS) invades a body cell from the outside. Its RNA is
reverse-transcribed (as if copying a mirror image) into the DNA of the
healthy individual by the reverse transcriptase enzyme. Then it is
inserted into the host genome by the integrase enzyme.

Reverse transcription represents the crucial aspect of the infectious
capacity of retroviruses that consist of a RNA genome contained in the
protein shell that is enclosed in a lipid envelope. 104 The retrovirus
genome is typically made up by three genes: the group-specific antigen
gene (gag), the polymerase gene (pol) and the envelope gene (env). The
pol gene encodes three enzymes — protease, reverse transcriptase and
