John Matthew’s Early Life in Bermuda
y grandfather, JM, was raised by his mother’s younger sister, Sarah (“Birdie”). He attended Pembroke Sunday
MSchool and was recognized for perfect attendance. When JM was about 8, Sarah married Robert Alford, a man
who is believed to have had a drinking problem, which deeply influenced JM’s life long strict stance against alcohol. It is
suspected that JM’s interactions with Robert Alford may have influenced his desire to leave Bermuda. It’s noted that it was
his grandfather, Robert Garrett, who sponsored JM’s training as a tailor rather than Robert Alford.
