My Father’s Medical Training

y father, John Robert, was an only child. Despite a challenging childhood helping my grandfather with deliveries,
Mhe entered medical school at Queen’s University in 1931 and graduated in 1937. Although teachers initially
doubted him, he excelled. While at Queen’s he met and dated my mother, Jean M. Truscott from Kingston, one of the
three daughters of Samuel Truscott, a school inspector for Frontenac County Schools. Following his MD graduation, in
July 1937 he began an internship at Mount Hamilton Hospital. During this internship marriage was against the rules. He
thus secretly married Jean Truscott at the Hamilton Cathedral on September 21, 1937. It is not clear when John and Jean’s
parents became aware of the marriage. The notice of the wedding in the Kingston Whig Standard didn’t appear until the
              summer of 1938.
