he family moved to Guelph, Ontario. My grandfather embraced his British roots, joined the local cricket club,
Tand started a dry-cleaning business, Card & Company Cleaners. Despite having only a Grade 4 education, he was
a successful businessman and a voracious reader. Indeed, he became at one point chairman of the Guelph Board of
Education. He continued a tailoring business well into his eighties after selling the cleaning business. He had an extensive
library of books, most of which contained many facts regarding the many areas of the British “Empire” around the world.
I never tired of visiting Guelph and reading, when we weren’t playing Euchre, of course.
