The Move to Ajax During World War II

n 1941, our family left Ayton and moved to Ajax, Ontario. My father took on a new role as the plant physician at Ajax
IDefense Industries Limited, a bomb manufacturing facility. I believe the move was driven by his sense of duty during
World War II. He wanted to contribute to the war effort while remaining exempt from military service as he was as Ayton’s
sole physician. I’m sure my mother welcomed the move from the isolation and loneliness of the Ontario snow belt. While
waiting for our Ajax house to be finished the Card family lived at 109 Gillard Avenue, in the east end of Toronto – near
Monarch Park. The Ajax “wartime house” still exists at 20 George Street.
