JM’s Journey to Canada and Marriage
y grandfather, John Matthew was born in Bermuda in 1879. At 19, he left, having trained as a tailor, and moved to
MNova Scotia. There, in 1906, he met and married Helen Pothier (Nellie), an Acadian from a prominent Wedgeport,
Nova Scotia ship building family. The Pothier family has been extensively studied, back before the 1700s and before with
immigration from the Potiers, France area, through the expulsion by the British in the mid to late 1700s, and eventual
resettlement in the Wedgeport, area. Their marriage blended British and Acadian heritage, a true example of opposites
attracting. It is believed that they had moved to Guelph, Ontario by 1908. Nellie preferred to return to Wedgeport, to give
birth to my father, John Robert Card, in Feb1910. They then returned to Guelph where they appear in the 1911 census.
