Life at Leonard Hall
n my second year, I moved into Leonard Hall, a new residence at Queen’s. I had a single room, which felt like a small
Iluxury. As before there was lots of camaraderie with the students in residence, who were from all schools on campus.
Meals at Leonard Hall were less than stellar—the pork hocks were particularly terrible. But there were upsides too, like the
time I joined a research project involving a liquid diet called “CRUD.” For two months, we lived entirely on this milkshake-
like substance, which saved us money and created a sense of camaraderie. I even developed a lifelong habit of taking my
coffee with sugar, since cream wasn’t allowed. We received a refund on our meal expenses at residence, one of the perks.
The research project was designed to see the effects of various fats on cholesterol levels. The professor of physiology, Dr.
“Butter Jim” Beveridge was the director of the project..
