Summers at the Cottage

ummers were a world of their own. My family owned a cottage on Lake Sydenham near Kingston, a place that became
Sa sanctuary. Th e cottage had a simple charm—a half-acre lot with a beautiful view of the lake. Its history was unique;
the original structures, built about 1900, had to be moved when a railway was built through the area in 1905. Even with the

trains running through the middle of the property until the 1980s, the cottage remained a treasured escape. The cottage
had been bought by my grandfather, Sam Truscott, in 1922 and subsequently by my father in 1948. My summer job one
year was painting the cottage, a task that became almost a family tradition. Decades later, it still looks much the same, a

testament to the love and care the family put into it, with my sister, Mary, having made it fully winterized. The lake remains
unspoiled, and sitting on the porch feels like stepping back in time.
