Starting a Life Together (1962-1963)
fter our honeymoon, Helen and I settled into our life together in Kingston. She worked as a nursing instructress at
AKingston General Hospital and supported me while I pursued summer research with Les Valberg. This was a formative
time for me, as it shaped my interest in academic medicine and laid the foundation for our life together. When I was on the
wards as a medical student, the student nurses would ask if I was “Mrs. Card’s husband!”
